A Cake Fit for a Princess

My second of three beautiful granddaughters, Addisan Kay,
Is turning four years old today.
Weeks prior, she requested Nana to make
A Rapunzel/Ariel Princess birthday cake.

Crazy ideas kept swirling inside my head
For a two-sided character princess, but instead,
Finding dolls in miniature, without hesitation,
I purchased them to use in my birthday creation.

The design plan was Rapunzel waiving high from a tower
With Ariel perched on a cliff  by the sea just below her.
The cakes would be baked in layers numbering five,
The base would have colorful sea creatures inside.

So into the batter, bright-colored dallops were put
To resemble the sea when the cake was cut.
Once cooled, the cake was assembled just so,
With a hole in the center where the tower would go.

Stacking it with frosting and using skewers of bamboo
Would keep it from toppling and hold Rapunzel too.
With all cakes in place, crumb frosting applied,
Needing a chill, to the fridge, placed inside.

A few hours later, frosting tinted, ready to begin,
The cake is placed on the turn-table and I give it a spin.
Starting with tan blocks on the tower's wall,
Pink shingles for the pointed roof that's standing so tall.

On to the base, carving out Ariel's niche and
Crumbled graham crackers placed to resemble the sand.
Tufts of grass went on in three shades of green
Covering the top of the base so no white would be seen.
Swirls of blue at the bottom for waves that are crashing
With a touch of white to appear as though they are splashing
Then a dash of true blue edible gel
Added here and there to add sparkle as well.

Ivy vines climb the tower, on each side of the window now
Where Rapunzel is peering out, her long hair flowing down.
Ariel is sitting in her cove with Sebastion the crab by her side
Her friend, Flounder, just below attempting to ride out the tide.

Final touches are in place--the rocks made from chocolate candy,
Pink sugar flakes that sparkle on the tower roof make it dandy.
At the very top, a purple flag is placed, its message unfurls,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ADDY!  One of my favorite little girls.
